UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS

Finally we have been able to arrange some collecting trips to local quarries.  These will be for members of CMGS (for insurance purposes), and will require the normal full PPE.  If you would like to attend any of these trips, please email me at m.milward1@yahoo.co.uk , and you will be provided details, directions and any further information you may need.

Friday 21 August.   Birch Hill Quarry, Coleford. 10.00 start

This is a quarry working the Carboniferous Pennant Sandstone, the rock contains numerous plant fossils and the faces show interesting geological features. (see Past Field Trips)  The quarry manager has mentioned an abandoned quarry a short walk away, so we might go and examine that as well.    

Saturday 12 September Naunton Quarry, Naunton 0900 start

This will be the third visit to Naunton quarry (see Past Field Trips), and we are indebted to Breedons for welcoming us and providing lots of information and the opportunity to collect the amazingly abundant Clypeus echinoids, as well as other Jurassic fossils.

Saturday 24 October  Daglingworth Quarry, Daglingworth        0900 start

We returned to Daglingworth Quarry last year after a long break (see Past Field Trips).  The quarry works a number Middle Jurassic formations which have in the past produced some good finds, including fish teeth and dinosaur footprints.

Future events will include the Geological Drive through Gloucestershire and Herefodshire, which is being arranged, and opportunities for displaying, exchanging, discussing and learning about anything members have collected.

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

Hardhat, reflective jacket and trousers (high-vis), composite boots, goggles are all essentials. You may want to plan for the weather, for example: suncream if its hot, water, snacks, raincoat, gloves, warm clothing if its cold, clothing you don’t mind getting muddy. Spare bags for any specimens you would like to take home are also a good idea along with tools of the trade such as hammers and chisels.

Can anyone go on a field trip?

Due to health and safety concerns and insurance coverage, only members are allowed to go on CMGS field trips.

How do I register my interest or sign up?

Please either fill out the contact form on our website, reply to the members-wide email or talk to one of the committee members at your next meeting if you would like to attend a field trip.
