UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS

Whitman’s Quarry - Saturday 1 March 2025

Mark Baggott is running a trip into Whitman’s Hill quarry in Storridge, near Malvern, between 10.30am and 13.30pm.  The quarry is Silurian limestone (Wenlock and Coalbrookdale formations, so approx. 430 million years old. There will be other groups attending as well; there is a £5 charge per car and all cars need to be booked in with Mark to avoid overbooking. Those not requiring parking charge is £2 per head. - MEMBERS ONLY FOR FIELD TRIPS DUE TO HEALTH AND SAFETY

Mark has provided the following further detail:

"We are meeting up at Storridge Parish Hall WR13 5EY which is located on the junction of A4103 and B4219 around 10.30am on Saturday. Parking is going to be a significant issue so best if either attendees can share vehicles or park at the church layby on the A4103 a couple of hundred yards past the junction.”

Hard hats and high vis are needed, and walking boots or wellies and the hall has been hired so will have toilet facilities and a display of the fossils found at the Quarry in the hall, details of the fossil box project as well as fossils for sale (proceeds to the fossil box project), plus a chance to donate spare fossils

We will set off for the quarry probably around 10.30-10.45 in convoy and then a talk at the quarry before folk have the chance to hunt.

Most fossils can be found by hand with fossils weathering out from the surface material, but small hammer is recommended for splitting rocks if needed. No hammering of the cliff faces is permitted, and bunds must not be crossed (risk of falling and deep water).

FAQs

What do I need to bring?

Hardhat, reflective jacket and trousers (high-vis), composite boots, goggles are all essentials. You may want to plan for the weather, for example: suncream if its hot, water, snacks, raincoat, gloves, warm clothing if its cold, clothing you don’t mind getting muddy. Spare bags for any specimens you would like to take home are also a good idea along with tools of the trade such as hammers and chisels.

Can anyone go on a field trip?

Due to health and safety concerns and insurance coverage, only members are allowed to go on CMGS field trips.

How do I register my interest or sign up?

Please either fill out the contact form on our website, reply to the members-wide email or talk to one of the committee members at your next meeting if you would like to attend a field trip.
